Niche Media Taps Dan Uslan as Michigan Avenue Magazine Publisher
Press Release
February 22, 2008
Niche Media Chairman Brian Greenspun has named Dan Uslan Publisher of the company's upscale lifestyle title, Michigan Avenue magazine, debuting September 15, 2008. As the former Senior Vice President of Sales, U.S.A. for Morris Visitor Publications, worldwide publishers of city and travel magazines such as WHERE and Where GusetBook (Formerly GuestInformant), Uslan will also serve as Midwest Sales for Niche Media, beginning his tenure March 17, 2008.

As Publisher and President of Midwest Sales, Uslan will be responsible for managing Michigan Avenue's business, creating and executing multi-tiered marketing programs, and managing the extraordinary Chicago-based team. Uslan will oversee the development of Michigan Avenue's sales and marketing efforts under the direction of Senior Vice Presidents of Publishing, Lori Burgess and Katherine Nicholls.

"We are excited to have Dan on board," stated Greenspun. "The successful launch of Michigan Avenue will continue to strengthen our influence through the consolidation of our national network of wealth markets."

"Niche Media's CEO Jason Binn has done an extraordinary job assembling an elite team of Chicago veterans who will truly catapult our new title to the forefront of the Chicago market," added Michael T. Carr, President of Greenspun Media Group.

"Dan Uslan brings with him a wealth of experience in magazine publishing and a true understanding of the Chicago market, having lived there for over nine years," Binn said. "He is a proven leader within the Chicago community and has a successful record in driving local sales and building brands."

"I can't wait to see the first issue of Michigan Avenue magazine. Having spent a great deal of time with some of the city residents, retailers, fashion and design people, I am so impressed," remarked Niche Media President Jerry Powers.

The Illinois Hotel & Lodging Association has recognized Uslan's accomplishments. In 2003 they presented him with the Allied Member of the Year Award. In addition, under Uslan's management, the Chicago-based operation of Morris Visitor Publications was recognized by the Greater North Michigan Avenue Association as Corporate Member of the Year in 2007.

Uslan comes to Niche Media after eight years with Morris Visitor Publications. He joined WHERE in 2000 and served as its Chicago Publisher and Regional Vice President before becoming Senior Vice President of Sales for the United States, where he managed nearly 150 employees. During his term, the company increased revenue and staffing by more than 300 percent through acquisitions and natural growth. Uslan was also credited with creating industry groundbreaking revenue streams such as "Where University," the country's first continuing education program for hospitality employees in addition to new product launches. Prior to WHERE, Uslan served as a Vice President of Thomson Newspaper's New Media division.

He currently serves on the Board of Directors of The Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau, The Greater North Michigan Avenue Association, and The Educational Foundation of the Illinois Hotel & Lodging Association. Uslan is a graduate of the State University of New York, after which he attended McGill University's Bronfman School of Business in Montreal, Quebec. He lives with his wife, Sharon, in the River North area of Chicago.

The unparalleled Michigan Avenue magazine team working with Uslan includes: Executive Editor Susanna Homan, who recently joined the magazine's staff from the Chicago Sun-Times, where she has penned her column "Susanna's Night Out" for more than seven years, and will continue to do so; Public Relations and Marketing Director Kelly Ryan O'Brien, who has been with the magazine since its inception more than one year ago; and Account Executive Liza Sweitzer, who recently joined the publication from Chicago Magazine, where she developed strong insights on the home and design market. Uslan will also work closely with newly appointed Advertising Director Rick Patrone, also from Chicago Magazine, who brings more than ten years of advertising account management experience with luxury advertisers. During his tenure at Chicago Magazine, Patrone increased the magazine's largest territory by 57 percent in just three years and recently received the 2007 Publisher's Award.
